THE MOTIVATION for the Regional Conference is to provide a venue for engineers of the Pacific Northwest to engage in technical presentations and forums that inform and educate attendees on the topics of sustainability, green processes and environmental management. The area comprising the Pacific Northwestern United States has demonstrated a proven commitment to sustainability practices on city, state, industrial and academic levels that lead the country on environmental and sustainability programs. The Regional Conference will serve as a platform for engineers within this forward-looking region to exchange emerging ideas about forms of implementation of sustainable processes, products and systems, as well as new technologies that serve the purpose of enhancing environmental protection. The Regional Conference will be conducted through a multi-faceted approach to presenting technical highlights and offering a forum for professional networking.
CONFERENCE FOCUS AREAS WILL INCLUDE:

CONFERENCE FORMAT:
This conference will showcase speakers from a variety of fields and disciplines from across the country to foster a comprehensive approach to discussions on sustainability principles. The breadth of topics that will be available through the program will be scheduled to appeal to the engineering community in all sectors: industry, academia, government and consulting.
Keynote speakers include: Hank Kohlbrand, Global Director of R&D at The Dow Chemical Company and AIChE President; Bob Sylvester, DuPont Engineering Research and Technology; John Dienhart, The Frank Shrontz Chair for Professional Ethics, Seattle University.
Speaker Lineup includes: Deb Grubbe, IfS Chair; Engineers from the Pacific Northwest National Lab and Idaho National Lab; Duane Naluai, VP Team Leader of Campbell’s Soup Company; Mark Morford, Attorney at Stoel Rives, LLP; Richard Edgehill of San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District; Frank Gonzales, Port of Seattle
The talks will be presented by local and national speakers considered to be experts in the areas of focus highlighted. Paper sessions, an exhibition floor for companies and organizations, panel discussions and open forum, or roundtable, talks and sessions are planned. The duration of the conference will be two full days. A tour will be made available for attendees to actively participate and visit a facility involved in sustainable practices. Social networking opportunities will be provided through casual meals to allow for engineers of the Pacific Northwest to establish connections and contacts with colleagues in the field.
WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE:
The conference will encourage communication among local AIChE and other engineering society sections primarily among the states of Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Alaska, but open to all. While the Puget Sound Local Section, Seattle University and National AIChE are the primary sponsors of this event, other industrial, academic and organizational sponsors are invited to participate in the support, planning and execution of the Regional Conference.
Those interested in promoting sustainability within their firm or involved in research for the advancement of a sustainable society are invited to participate in this pivotal colloquium.
CONFERENCE COMMITMENT:
The First AIChE Regional Conference on Sustainability in the Pacific Northwest seeks to promote environmental stewardship and awareness of sustainability through its technical and social programming. The Conference Planning Board has committed to implementing sustainable practices throughout the planning and execution phases of the Conference. These initiatives include pursuing measures to enhance energy efficiency, promote use of renewable resources, rely on recycled, compostable and recyclable products, purchase carbon offsets and reduce water consumption and waste generation at the Conference venue. The Conference Planning Board will make every effort to encourage Conference goers, sponsors and organizers to adhere to the Conference Commitment.
